History of the Union
In the present age there is no hope for working men outside of organization. Without a trades union, the workman meets the employer at a great disadvantage.”
Peter J. McGuire
Founder of the Brotherhood
Year: 1881
It has been estimated that carpenter apprenticeship accounts for 60 percent of all apprentices in all the building trades. The objective today is to give training so thorough that carpenters may hold their own in our fast-moving construction technology. This initiated a formalized on-the-job training with related classroom instruction.
The union has grown from 36 men originally to more than 775, 000 members throughout North America.
Over the years wages have progressed from meager pay to more than twice as much per hour as the early members received for an entire 12-hour day.
The union has journeyed from struggling for the right to organize to having this right taken for granted.
The members have gone from being blacklisted for seeking collective bargaining to having this process guaranteed by law.
